Why This Workshop:
The ability to solve word problems is a critical part of mathematics learning in the elementary grades, and it requires students to master and simultaneously implement mathematical computations, procedures, language, and reasoning. This session examines deliberate, systematic instruction in solving word problems based on the IES Guide for Assisting Students Struggling in Mathematics (Fuchs et al., 2021) and related research.
Key Learning Objectives:
· Teach students how to identify different types of word problems and effective solution methods.
· Utilize strategies for identifying relevant information, language, and vocabulary necessary for understanding and solving problems.
· Provide opportunities for students to evaluate word problems including worked solutions.
· Plan deliberately for students to practice using evidence-based practices that promote retention.
