Why This Workshop:
Current standards require students from elementary to middle school to write coherent paragraphs and compositions across various genres and purposes. Writing informative/explanatory texts is a complex process, which entails the integration of multiple knowledge competencies and writing skills to be successful. Educators will learn to develop effective writing units and lessons that focus on the writing process, explicit strategy instruction, and vocabulary and knowledge building.
Key Learning Objectives:
Examine ways to develop topics specific to informative and explanatory texts, including the incorporation of specific facts, defining details, and examples
Develop methods for organizing information and ideas using graphic organizers and outlines
Learn varied strategies for writing effective topic/ concluding sentences and introductions/ conclusions
Identify practices and strategies for varying vocabulary, sentence starters, and transition words
