Why This Workshop
How can we help students move beyond rote procedures and develop a deep, flexible understanding of math concepts? Using manipulatives and visual representations (e.g., concrete-representational-abstract) builds students’ conceptual and procedural math knowledge. In this workshop, you’ll explore strategies for integrating different manipulatives across content and grade levels, identify barriers to implementation, and discover solutions to maximize their impact. Walk away with practical tools and resources to promote seamless classroom application, build understanding, and enhance math learning.
Key Learning Objectives
· Understand the connection between using manipulatives and building students’ math knowledge.
· Learn the progression of visual representations across grade levels.
· Explore different manipulatives that can be used in the classroom.
· Address common pitfalls and mistakes of manipulative instruction.
· Gain resources to better incorporate manipulatives within instruction.
