Why This Workshop:
Research supports having children understand and interact with complex, informational texts across content areas. Students benefit from explicit instruction in identifying text structure, examining text features, and distinguishing relevant information as they build comprehension and new knowledge. Educators can effectively support student comprehension of informational texts through a robust, integrated approach.
Key Learning Objectives:
Examine elements of nonfiction/informational text and utilize text features to promote comprehension
Support comprehension using graphic organizers aligned with text structure
Learn to activate and build background knowledge and vocabulary
Generate knowledge checks and discussion questions to enrich comprehension and support critical thinking and language development
Gain structured summary activities to deepen understanding and retention
